Neofinetia falcata is the first orchid ever to be grown as a house plant in Japan in the 1600's. It is also known as the Samurai Orchid, as Shogun Tokugawa Ienari fell in love with the plant in the late 1800's. It is rumored that samurai would help in searching and collecting the plants from the mountains.

In Japan, the native orchid Neofinetia falcata, known as fuh-ran, or "the orchid of the winds," has highly prized, variegated foliage and a small, delicate, and fragrant flower with a long nectar spur. Its nickname, the "samurai orchid," harks to the time when only the warrior class was allowed to grow it—or even possess it.

1 SincerelySpicy • 1 yr. ago This sort of leaf dehydration can be caused by extended lack of water—2-3+ weeks without enough water, though the leaf loss indicates that it may have been even longer—or if there are insufficient healthy roots. From the sound of it, I'm guessing that it's partly because you don't have very many roots.

Conditions are even colder for a longer period in Korea. Winter rainfall is lower in the habitat, and water should be reduced for cultivated plants during this time. Even less water should be given plants that are grown in very cool conditions. Even these plants should not be allowed to become completely dry, however.

Neofinetia falcata Murasakitaishi ("Against Purple") is a look-alike to Shutennou, the most popular pink-blooming variety of fukiran. Flowers are characterized by a dark pink peduncle and nectary spur with a pink blush on the flowers. Leaves of Murasakitaishi are a bit smaller than standard size and make lovely clumps of happiness. Some of the difference is due to differences in culture.
